From Interstate 40 (Knoxville area) take Interstate 81 north to exit #23. At the end of
the exit ramp, turn right onto Hwy. 11E. Go approximately 30 miles to Matthews Mill
Road which is 1/2 mile past the Mountain View Restaurant on the left. Turn right onto
Matthews Mill and travel about 1 1/2 miles, over the railroad tracks and take a left at
the fork in the road. The Embree House will be the first house on the left.
Travelling south on Interstate 81 from Virginia, take exit 57A which will be Interstate
26 east. Proceed about 8 miles on 26 east to exit #17 which is Boone's Creek Road.
At the end of the exit ramp, turn right. Go approximately 7 miles to Hwy 11E (there is
a McDonalds and a Shell station at the corner) Make a right onto 11E for
approximately 6 miles. On the left you will see a large red and white military surplus
barn. As you go past the barn, you will start up an incline. Take the next left which is
at the top of the hill onto Stockyard Road (the Bush Hog Plant is on the right hand side
of the road.) Make your first right onto Paynetown Road. Take Paynetown until it dead
ends into Matthews Mill. Go left onto Matthews Mill, over the railroad tracks and you
will come to a fork int he road. Go left and the Embree House will be the first house on
the left.
From Interstate 26 from Asheville, NC take exit #37 which is State Route 81 toward
Jonesborough. Make a left at the end of the exit ramp onto route 81. Travel
approximately 10-15 miles to State Route 34 which only goes left. Make a left onto
route 34. Stay on that road until you get to Telford. You will pass Telford Methodist
Church on the left. The second street on the right past the church is Matthews Mill.
Make a right, go left around the curve and the Embree House is the first house on the
right.
